How to become a Zaidi

This link has good advice in English on how to become a Zaidi:

Come on Sunni and Shi'a converts to Islam, let's all unite under one banner, the centre unity math-hab of Zaidism! What Muslims need is unity!
Imam Zaid bin Ali bin al Hussain said:
"Muslims are not brothers when they accuse each other and kill each other."
But only a few Muslims (the Zaidis) listened to him.
The Shi-ites didn't support him because he refused to make accusations against Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman. The non Shi-ites didn't support him because they had accepted the corrupt leader of the time.
Sunnis: Why co-operate with corrupt leaders? Look where it has got you!
12er Shi-ites: Why persist with the myth of the hidden Imam? (Muslims usually convert to Islam because they cannot accept that God has a son. It doesn't make sense to them. A hidden imam doesn't make sense to new muslims either!)
Sunnis and 12 Shi-ites: It is your duty to stop fighting and reach a compromise, that means meeting half way. Zaidism is the half-way point. Hope to see you there.

  2. Thanks for your question, I was wondering the same thing myself. You are right, it is in between. Brother Aws from Arabia has listed for us the differences between Zaidi salaat and (a) Hanafi salaat, (b) 12 Imamer salaat. It won’t fit here so I’ll make a new blog post entitled “How Zaidis perform their salaat”
Let's hope all Muslims will one day pray the same way, the happy medium.

  3. How Zaidis Perform their Salaat: (a) for Sunnis

    (a) Salaat (prayer) the Zaidi way, for Sunnis:

    Part 1. Joining prayers:
When you become Zaidi, it is permissible for you to join your prayers and pray on 3 occasions a day instead of five, even if you are not travelling and even if the weather is good. You can join thuhr and asr together, and join maghrib and isha together, if you want to. This will make it easier to practise your Islam while at work, or while living in a non muslim country; Islam is not meant to be a difficult religion to practise. You don’t have to join your prayers if you don’t want to, it is just an option available to you if you find it more convenient.
    Part 2. Tashahhud:
To modify your Tashahhud to the Zaidi way, leave out the following sentence at the beginning: “Attahiyaatu lillaahi wassalawaatu wattayyibaatuh, assalaamu alaika ayyuhaannabiyu warahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu, assalaamu alainaa wa alaa ibaadillaahissaaliheen”
Instead, you need to say this:
“Bismillaahi, wa billaahi, walhamdulillaahi, wal asmaa ulhusnaa kulluhaa lillah”,
Then you make the shahaadah as usual:
ash-hadu allaa illaaha illalaah, wahdahu laa shareekalah, wa ash-hadu anna muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluh.”
If you are ending the salaat after that (if it’s the final juloos/ sitting), you can add this, as usual, if you want to:
“Allahumma salli alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin, wa baarik alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin, kamaa sallaita wa baarakta alaa Ibrahim, wa alaa aali Ibrahim, innaka hameedun majid”.
“Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah”
    Part 3. Athan and iqaama:
To modify your athan to the Zaidi way, you will need to add an extra line. It is “hayya alaa khairil amal” which means “Hurry to do the best of deeds”.
Part 4: Shorter athan at fajr time:
To modify your fajr athan, you will need to delete the sentence: “Assalaatu khairummin annowm” (Prayer is better than sleeping in”) as this sentence was added by Umar bin al Khattab during his caliphate.
    Part 5: Takbirs:
As a Zaidi, you only need to raise your hands once, when you do your initial takbir at the start, and not again after that.
    Part 6: Saying “Ameen”:
As a Zaidi, you don’t need to say “Ameen” after you recite sura al Fatiha.
Part 7: Folding arms in ruku:
As a Zaidi, you can simply let your arms hang at your side while you stand in prayer, you do not need to fold them on your chest.
    Part 8: Du’aa kunoot:
As a Zaidi you make du’aa qunoot after doing ruku in Fajr, not before.
Part 9: Prayer leaders who disrespect the descendants of the prophet:
As a Zaidi, if you know an Imam disrespects the descendants of the Prophet you should not pray behind them.
Part 10: Opening of the prayer:
Zaidis don’t say: “Subhaanakallahumma wa bihamdika wa tabaarakasmuka wa laa illaha ghairuk” after their first takbir like Hanafis do. Instead they go straight to “Bismillaahi arrahmanirraheem and sura al Fatiha. There are some ayats of qur’an they say as an opening statement before they make the first takbir. I’ll add these in my next post here.

    1. Assalu Alaikum Ya Brother I have a question is it Permissible to hold hands on Chest as a Zaidi

  4. (b) Salaat (prayer) the Zaidi way, for 12 Imamer Shi-ites:
Part 1. Washing feet in wudhu:
When you become a Zaidi, you will need to wash your feet in wudhu rather than just wiping them with wet hands.
Part 2. Sujood on any clean surface:
When you become a Zaidi it will now be permissible to make your sujood on carpet or any clean surface instead of it having to be something natural like a stone. This will help you not to stand out when praying in majority sunni mosques.
    Part 3. Athan and iqaama:
When you become a Zaidi you will no longer need to add the line “Ash-hadu an Aliyyan waliyyullah” to your athan and iqaama. You will need to add “Hayya alaa khairal a’mal” to them both.
    Part 4. Tashahhud:
Before saying: “Allahumma salli alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin” you need to say “Bismillaahi, wa billaahi, walhamdulillaahi, wal asmaa ulhusnaa kulluhaa lillah”, then say the shahaadah as usual. Then if you wish you can add the “Allahumma salli alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin” after the shahaadah.
Part 5. Tasleem on both sides:
When you do tasleem, you will need to say “assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah” twice instead of once, and turn your head to both the right and left instead of just the right.

    (c) Salaat (prayer) the Zaidi way for new Muslims:
If you can’t find a Zaidi to teach you how to pray, find a sunni or a 12 imamer shi-ite to teach you their way (beware of salafis and tablighis!) then use the guide above to modify your salaat. The Zaidi way is the authentic math-hab passed to Muslims through the Prophet’s grandsons, great grandsons and great great grandsons, from Arabia, and preserved without additions or subtractions since the lifetime of Zaid bin Ali by the Zaidi imams in northern Yemen until today, thanks to Allah. The sunni and 12 imamer shi-ite math-habs were developed in Iraq, Syria and Iran in the decades after Imam Zaid’s death, where many false ahadith were circulating under the corrupt leaders of the time, therefore they may have unauthorized additions and subtractions.

  6. This is what you can recite as an opening to the salaat, before you say the takbir, it was sent by Aws in English, I'll ask him to post it here in Arabic text as well:

I have turned my face toward him Who created the heavens and the earth, as one by nature upright, and I am not of the idolaters. )ayah 6:79( my worship and, my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds.(ayah 6:162)He hath no partner. This am I commanded, and I am first of those who surrender unto Him.)ayah 6:163(
Praise be to Allah, Who hath not taken unto Himself a son, and Who hath no partner in the Sovereignty, nor hath He any protecting friend through dependence. And magnify Him with all magnificence. (111)
    in arabic

  7. its befor the takbeerat el ehram (the starting takbeer) and its optional not compulsory :

  8. The Zaidi converts in Chile have some good info about salaat at their blog: zaidiyya.wordpress.com Although it is in Spanish, if you click on "Translate to English" it translates into legible English, unlike the Arabic websites.
Thank-you Chilean Zaidis for all your hard work!

  9. how can "sunni" be wrong simply by following someone you claim to be oppressive? even if we accepted that doesn't mean their belief and practice is wrong.

wouldn't it be logical to present your evidences of how to pray?

and Umar didnt add "salatul khayrum minan-nawm" it was the Prophet (saas)

It was narrated that Abu Mahdhoorah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I said: “O Messenger of Allaah, teach me the Sunnah of adhaan.” He wiped the front of my head and said: “Say Allaah akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaah akbar, Allaahu akbar (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great)… And if it is Fajr prayer, then say: Al-salaatu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salaatu khayrun min al-nawm (Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep).

According to another, similar report, it says: “Al-salaatu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salaatu khayrun min al-nawm (Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep) in the first adhaan of dawn.”

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 501; al-Nasaa’i, 633; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

and its a sunnah to say ameen the Prophet said those who say it would have their sins forgiven.

when one of you says "aameen" in prayer and the angels in the sky say "aameen", and they coincide), his past sins are forgiven. this is found in Bukhaari , Muslim, Nasaa'i, & Daarimi.

im confused at what you are calling for here on this blog and you seem to be playing the old lib/labour game of the other side are bad so come to us but without saying why zaidis are any better.

  10. Salaam brother, this section was not really intended for people to make a fuss about the trivial differences between the salaat of sunnis, Zaidis and 12ers. This section is for people like me who have already decided to pray like Zaidis and want to make those modifications. I have already done that and it is no big deal. We are all prostrating before our Sustainer like the Qur'an repeatedly tells us to, that's the main thing. If some worshippers want to add extras to their prayer here or there it is no big deal, and Zaidis are not saying that sunni or 12er salaat is unacceptable... same goes for athan...I know there are lots of conflicting ahadith, that's why I prefer to go with a narrator who was raised by the Prophet (saw)'s great grandson Zainul abideen, i.e. Imam Zaid...
